Start with the purpose of the score
An AEO score should be a diagnostic, not a vanity metric. Its value comes from showing which aspects of a page limit answer readiness and which improvements deserve attention first.
A useful assessment looks across five connected areas: answer clarity, structure, topical context, evidence, and technical search foundations.
1. Clarify the primary answer
Identify the main question the page should resolve. Give readers a concise, specific answer near the beginning, then expand on it. Avoid opening with broad promotional language that delays the useful information.
- Use the language your audience uses in the question
- State the answer in a passage that makes sense on its own
- Replace vague claims with concrete explanations
- Keep important qualifications close to the answer
2. Strengthen content structure
Use headings as a meaningful outline, not decoration. Each section should cover one subtopic and make its relationship to the primary question obvious.
- Use one descriptive page heading
- Create a logical heading hierarchy
- Use lists for genuine steps, criteria, or comparisons
- Keep paragraphs focused on one central idea
3. Add topical and entity context
Name and define the products, organizations, people, places, and concepts that matter. Explain relationships explicitly instead of assuming the reader—or an automated system—will infer them.
4. Support important claims
Answer engines need reasons to trust a passage. Support consequential claims with first-party experience, transparent methods, examples, data, or credible references. Show publication and update dates when the subject changes over time.
5. Protect the SEO foundation
Confirm the page returns a successful response, can be crawled, uses an appropriate canonical URL, appears in the sitemap, and is internally linked from relevant pages. AEO cannot compensate for a page that search engines cannot reliably discover or index.
Turn the score into a prioritized plan
Fix blockers first: crawl problems, missing answers, confusing structure, and unsupported core claims. Then improve supporting context and presentation. Re-score after meaningful changes and track whether the page earns qualified search traffic and references over time.
